Program Description
Students will learn that the original, Indigenous name for Long Island is Sewanaka- The Island of Shells. While making scallop shell necklaces, with leather and pony beads, students will learn about the history about the wampum shell. Most people only think of it as currency, but the history of it is far more meaningful to Indigenous people. Jingle, mussel, slipper, and conch shells will also be discussed as well as the current state of the water surrounding Long Island and it's effect on the health of all sea life. As individuals, what can we do to care for our beautiful environment, here, on Long Island?
