Program Description
Emmy Award winning journalist Cheryl Wills is a direct descendant of Civil War Veteran Sandy Wills. Sandy Wills was a Tennessee slave who escaped from the Edmund Wills Plantation in 1863 to fight for his freedom as a member of The United States Colored Troops. Cheryl Wills, a prominent television anchor/journalist/author based in New York City, is the author of the new illustrated children's book, "The Emancipation of Grandpa Sandy Wills," the YA book, "Emancipated! My Family's Fight for Freedom," and NEW for 2022 "EMMA," which is about Sandy Wills' brave wife. Cheryl teaches students about her grandfather's valiant fight for freedom during the Civil War. She has received numerous awards and has been featured on NBC News, CBS News & ABC News. A documentary is being made about her grandfather's service in the Union Army.
