Program Description
Children’s book author and illustrator, Nina Crews, presents her books and talks about the writing and illustrating process to elementary school children. In her presentations to PreK and Kindergarten, she keeps her points simple – where ideas come from and how words and pictures can tell stories about our lives. With 1st – 3rd grade, she talks more technically, explaining the many steps involved in any project from the first inspiration, through rewriting and rewriting to finished book. She talks about her family and growing up with creative parents (author/illustrators Donald Crews and Ann Jonas.) Whatever the age of the audience, she devotes time towards the end of her presentations to questions. Nina’s work has been recognized by the ALA Notable Committee, National Council of Teachers of English, Cooperative Children’s Book Council, Junior Library Guild, Bank Street College of Education and numerous others. Her books highlight the experiences of children, celebrate diversity and the Black experience.
