Program Description
On September 23rd, 2015, as the leaves were beginning to turn golden and fall to the ground, the Freemans waved goodbye to a crowd of supporters and paddled their canoe into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. They would not cross a road, enter a building, take a shower, or leave the wilderness for the next 366 days. Their strategic goal, in partnership with The Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters, was to use their skills as seasoned wilderness explorers, educators, and storytellers to protect the Nation’s most popular wilderness area. The threat facing the Boundary Waters is from copper mines proposed upstream. They spent the year bearing witness to the wilderness area that they love. Their journey helped elevate the fight to protect the Boundary Waters to the national stage and helped Amy and Dave see and experience the world in a whole new way. During this powerful and insightful virtual program the Freemans share important lessons about conservation, advocacy, the important of Wilderness, as well as how a year in the Boundary Waters changed their priorities and understanding of what really matters. With so much knowledge to share, the Freemans effectively bring their Year in the Wilderness to a wide range of audiences through virtual programs uniquely tailored for environmental groups, universities, libraries, and outdoor symposiums. Additional venues include scout troops, camps, middle school, and high school environmental clubs. From the value of wilderness and spending time in nature, to what gear to pack on your next wilderness adventure, Dave and Amy will tailor their message to your audience’s unique interests. The Freemans will leave them excited, empowered, and inspired by their unique story.
