Steel Sensation, Trinidadian Steel Band

Steel Sensation, a Trinidadian Steelband ensemble, composes a range of songs for the traditional steel drum. Their repertoire includes traditional calypso, popular, classical and world music songs. In this program, artists both perform and explore the history of Steelband music, the design and construction of the steel drum and how the repertoire changes over time. During in-class workshops, students conduct artist interviews and share their findings through essays. Students will learn about the different culture and traditions of Trinidad, as well as having the opportunity to orally interview the performers about their culture and the tradition of steel drums.
