Program Description
"Undocumented" in a true story of young teen Harold Fernandez's journey from the mean streets of Medellin, Colombia as a young teen to reunite with his parents in America. The family had been separated for 2 - 4 years while the parents worked and lived in the shadows to make enough money to bring their 2 young sons over. The 13 year-old and his 11 year-old brother traveled in a small wooden boat through the treacherous Bermuda Triangle during hurricane season. Overcoming arduous hardships - learning English, catching up academically, enduring taunts and bullying from classmates and more -- Harold eventually rose to become the Valedictorian of his high school in NJ, then entered Princeton University where his undocumented status was discovered. Through sheer perseverance, hard work and the help of powerful allies, he went on to Harvard Medical School and is now one of the top cardiac surgeons in NY state, saving countless lives. This is the story of this humble man; inspiring, sad, frightening and ultimately triumphant, the film leaves audiences cheering and uplifted. Like most of Patricia's programs, this shows a commitment to equity and inclusion through culturally responsive and socially just engagement with diverse audiences. Producers Patricia Shih, Greg Blank and subject Dr. Harold Fernandez are available to speak and do a Q & A online after the screening. "Undocumented" has won 16 awards and honors from 13 film festivals and competitions.
