Program Description
The Junkman, Donald Knaack - the ORIGINAL recycled materials percussionist! - offers a Professional Development class for teachers. "Rhythm and Improvisation," a day-long course in developing skills in rhythm and improvisation—- two skills that are vital in almost all modern music-making. This course is designed to increase awareness about the intricacies and nuances in rhythm and time keeping as well as the basics of improvisation (both free and structured). This class is primarily taught via the use of reused materials to avoid the intimidation factor involved in using traditional musical instruments. The final part of the session switches everyone back from "junk" and onto playing their instruments of choice as they utilize the principles they learned during the day, thus bringing the day’s lessons full circle. Award-winning, classically trained percussionist/composer/environmentalist Donald Knaack has performed at festivals, street events, & venues worldwide, inc. stadiums with the Eminem, Blink 182, The Black Eyed Peas, in television commercials for ESPN, The NBA, Electronic Arts, Air BnB, PowerDot, Nike, and Paddle to Live, and in media staples such as Late Night with Conan O’Brien, CBS Sunday Morning, CBS News, National Public Radio, the BBC, Associated Press, and Billboard Magazine. His Help Our Planet (HOP) education initiative for kids has garnered Awards of Excellence from the Governor of Vermont, the United Nations, and the Federal Republic of Mexico.
