Program Description
Take a writer’s journey with the Becoming America's Stories historical fiction presentation. Learn how the author researched and incorporated family storytelling into the award-winning books—The Heart of Bakers and Artists, The Dreams of Singers and Sluggers, and The Wishes of Sisters and Strangers. Becoming America's Stories takes place in New York’s Lower East Side, 1911. The streets teemed with millions of immigrants vying for the American dream. While history unfolded, children grew up in the crowded tenements among the changes. The books follow the stories of a girl, Lily Taglia, and her family as they assimilate their Sicilian culture and become part of America’s stories. Discover how the author researched and collected material to create believable and compelling stories. The author will also read a chapter from a requested book, lead inclusive and welcoming group discussions, and answer questions about the books. Curriculum Connection activities are available upon request.
