Storyteller and Performing Artist, Dafna Soltes Stein engages students in an historical fiction about the African slave trade, slavery on Long Island, Abolition and the Underground Railroad. Students find themselves wondering about the topic of justice and wrestling with the binary opposites of slavery versus freedom. Then and Now. This seven day theatre residency takes place over several weeks. It includes three 50 minute sequenced storytelling performances, followed by 6 visits per classroom in which students imagine that their classroom has been transformed into a movie set where they get to act out the script ESCAPE TO FREEDOM ON THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD written by Dafna. Costumes and props are provided. This is history brought to life. A Teacher's Guide and Student Workbook are available. The Teaching Artist meets with participating faculty beforehand for project planning. See Video link on YouTube and www.kintelplus.org for more information.
