Program Description
Karen Land—writer, public speaker, and three-time participant in the 1000-mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race across Alaska—and her Alaskan husky, Noggin, will be returning to New York schools and public libraries for talks in 2025. Since 2000, Karen has given over a thousand talks in almost every state. Karen loves providing MUSHING talks for always-eager students and enthusiastic library patrons. Dogs, the sport of mushing, and Alaska inspire a diverse audience, making the event fun and interesting for all ages. Dog mushing, a traditional mode of arctic transportation, is a unique subject perfect for every classroom. From STEM (climate change and environmental studies) to literature (Gary Paulsen and Jack London) to the arts and physical education, the options for exploration are endless. Karen Land is also a co-writer on the newly released TRAIL ANGELS album. Based on mushing stories from 10 years of columns Karen penned for newspapers and magazines, Trail Angels takes listeners on an album-length journey to the wild north to experience the lives of mushers, Alaskan huskies, bush pilots, and more. Karen's songs are an exciting and creative addition to the countless other mushing books and media many teachers already use in the classroom.
