Program Description
Discover the power of the spirit over oppression. The Orchestra Long Island String Quartet and Soprano perform music written inside Nazi Concentration Camps by Jewish composers, many of who perished. This riveting middle/high school program teaches students about censorship, propaganda, resistance, and survival with artwork both by artists banned by the Nazis and created by children in the camps, as well as poetry written by the children of the camps, creating a riveting background to the music. Students will learn about the composers and their music, the artists and poets and their works, Terezin and other camps, and an overview of the Holocaust, making connections to the contemporary issues of human rights and tolerance by studying music's (and the arts) role in this historic period. Includes extensive study materials and visual arts presentation.
