Program Description
One of the most important lessons a writer can learn is that writing is rewriting. It's a difficult concept for many writers and hard for students to grasp as well. In this writing workshop, students will focus on the editing process, learn how to spot sections of the story that need fine-tuning, and how to transform a decent writing sample into one that really sparkles. We'll look at sentence structure, word use, working with an editor (your teacher, a trusted parent or friend) and the best ways to tackle a writing project. To practice editing, students will work on first draft pages from one of NYT-bestselling author Jen Calonita's middle grade novels, learning how to spot areas that need improvement and discussing them as a group. They'll then review the final versions of those pages so that the differences can be discussed. Workshops usually work best with groups 40 students or less at a time. Several workshops can be accommodated on the same day. Jen also offers a writing workshop called "twisting fairy tales on the spot," working with students to mash up different fairy tales, and fairy tale film and movie characters to create an entirely new story that both excites students and makes them want to run home and keep writing.
