Program Description
Before the inventions of radio & television made it possible to bring professional entertainment into homes, it was common for families & communities to entertain themselves by singing & dancing to homemade music. The Homegrown String Band is a twenty-first century incarnation of the traditional family band, proudly carrying on the tradition of making a joyful sound & sharing it with friends & neighbors. Their unique sound is rooted in the tradition of the rural string & jug bands that recorded during the 1920s & ‘30s, but is also very much influenced by the blues, bluegrass, jazz, & rock ’n roll that has been added to the melting pot of American music. This program covers improvisation and the oral traditions of American music as well as a discussion of the origin, construction, and playing techniques of the instruments used to create the music. Students learn the unique circumstances that brought European & African cultures together to create the American musical experience.
