Program Description
"Character Revolutions" is a character education program created exclusively for middle school students. The program is designed to introduce students to the universal pillars of character and many other essential virtues conveyed through the music and lyrics of The American Songbook. Using selections from the Hi-Fidelity Preservation Society's vintage record archive, students will be exposed to the timeless recordings of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Peggy Lee, Nat King Cole, and other prominent 20th century artists. The group listening experience is followed by class discussions of the lyrics and the specific character virtues presented in the music. The songs and themes are specially selected based on subject matter relevant to character development such as trust, respect, personal responsibility, empathy, citizenship, honesty, self expression, facing adversity, pursuing dreams, and more. The objective of the program is to inspire students to develop a strong lifelong foundation of character anchored to the enduring music of The American Songbook. These unique American songs have been performed and embraced by every generation for the past 100 years. The music serves as an enduring reminder of the character virtues they represent, providing young people with the wisdom to overcome challenges to their character and conscience. The ultimate objective is to promote civility, well-roundedness and personal excellence to students of all backgrounds- focusing on the positive aspects of humanity that connect us all. *This is a 4 part residency program comprised of four 45 minute presentations for each class of 25 students. The program can run throughout the length of the entire school year, or within the span of a single quarter depending of the hosting school's preference. It can be incorporated into the district's existing music program, after-school enrichment, or as an elective.
