Program Description
Dave Roman, author and illustrator of the award-winning graphic novel series Unicorn Boy and Astronaut Academy, will share a dynamic presentation about how reading as a kid motivated him to make his own books and pursue a career in the arts. Using humor, personal anecdotes, and visual examples, Dave will discuss the writing and drawing techniques used to create cartoons and graphic novels. His enthusiasm for celebrating all forms of creativity will be sure to inspire everyone to create their own visual stories! Dave will also share insight into working at Nickelodeon Magazine, where he developed comics based on popular TV characters like SpongeBob Squarepants and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Using humor and language kids can relate to, Dave will discuss his writing process, drawing tools, techniques, and the life of a cartoonist. From brainstorming ideas to writing and revising, art supplies and techniques, Dave will invite people of all ages to share his love for visual storytelling. His passion and humor will demystify the publishing process and inspire even self-proclaimed ‘non-artists’ to want to create their own graphic novels! Each presentation includes a behind-the-scenes slideshow (PowerPoint) revealing the steps to making a graphic novel from idea to full-color art. There will be a live drawing demonstration, Q&A, and lots of audience participation. Any additional time needed for book signing is complimentary.
