Program Description
Speak with Power is a six-week after-school program designed to help students unlock the power of their voices and develop the skills of effective public speaking, rhetoric, and advocacy. Guided by Dr. Jamel Coy Hudson, professor of rhetoric and public advocacy, the program equips young people with the confidence and tools they need to communicate clearly, think critically, and lead with purpose. Students will learn to: Overcome fear and nervousness when speaking in front of others. Organize and present ideas clearly, logically, and persuasively. Listen actively and respond respectfully to the ideas of their peers. Study and perform speeches from great orators and advocates of the past and present. Write and deliver original speeches on issues that matter to them and their communities. By blending performance, history, and hands-on practice, Speak with Power encourages students to see themselves as leaders and change-makers. The program emphasizes that speaking is not just about performance—it is about responsibility, advocacy, and the ability to inspire others. With Speak with Power, students gain the confidence to stand tall, speak with conviction, and use their voices to create a more respectful, inclusive, and just world.
