Program Description
Author, Maria LaPlaca Bohrer recently retired after 28 years as a classroom and reading teacher. She has also taught Children’s Literature and Writing graduate courses for teachers. Her picture book, Sofia’s Stoop Story: 18th Street, Brooklyn, received the 2015 Teachers’ Choice Award. Kirkus Reviews states that this book is a richly sentimental picture of a Sunday gathering from the author’s youth. In Maria’s presentation, she discusses her writing process from seed to published book. She reads her book, then engages the students in comprehension activities with a focus on how writers show, don’t tell. Maria will answer students’ questions. She modifies her program to meet the needs of the students and grade levels when necessary.
