Program Description
In 1952, Folkways Records released a six LP compilation entitled The Anthology of American Folk Music. This seminal collection of American music, edited by eccentric artist & collector Harry Smith, had a huge impact on the thriving mid-twentieth century folk music scenes of Cambridge, Massachusetts, & NYC’s Greenwich Village. The 84 songs included were culled from Smith’s extensive collection of blues & country 78 rpm records produced during the “Golden Age of Recording.” The recordings were all made between 1927, when new technology made high quality recordings & radio broadcasts possible, & 1932 when the recording industry began to feel the effects of the Great Depression. Homegrown String Band’s Anthology of American Folk Music program features original arrangements of selections chosen from the original compilation as well as other historically significant country & blues music recorded during this important period in the history of American music. Performed as a trio, also available as a duo.
