Teachers spend the day in a working with the with NYSATA region 10. Tuesday, November 3, 2026, 9am to 3pm At Stony Brook University; Wang Center Cost: $75 Come join us for a day filled with art making, art inspiration, and gallery visit. This engaging professional development workshop invites art educators to explore how identity can become a powerful catalyst for artistic growth, creative process development, and meaningful student artmaking. Through a series of hands-on experiences, participants will investigate personal identity using mind maps, ATC (Artist Trading Card) studies, personality and identity prompts, symbolism, reflection, and visual storytelling. These strategies provide educators with practical ways to help students move beyond simply creating an artwork toward developing a deeper understanding of how their experiences, interests, culture, relationships, and personal stories influence their artistic voice. Participants will also explore Asian-inspired and Asian-influenced art and contemporary artistic practices through a gallery experience, examining how artists use materials, traditions, cultural connections, and personal narratives to communicate identity. The gallery component encourages educators to look closely, ask questions, make connections, and consider how works of art can serve as springboards for classroom conversations and creative investigations. The workshop culminates in a hands-on Kinusaiga experience, introducing participants to the Japanese fabric-art technique traditionally created by fitting fabric pieces into a patterned surface without sewing. Educators will explore the process, materials, history, and contemporary possibilities of Kinusaiga while creating their own artwork. The experience emphasizes how an unfamiliar process can encourage experimentation, problem-solving, cultural connections, and personal expression. Throughout the workshop, educators will experience each activity as both artist and teacher, considering how the process can be adapted for different grade levels, abilities, and classroom settings. Participants will leave with a collection of ready-to-use lesson plans, identity mind-map activities, ATC prompts, gallery observation resources, identity reflection tools, and a Kinusaiga lesson plan, allowing them to immediately bring these creative processes back to their students.
