Program Description
Character and Sports Leadership is a dynamic program led by Dr. Jamel Coy Hudson, professor, rhetorician, and former elite athlete. Drawing on his experience as a competitive wrestler, Dr. Hudson brings a unique perspective to the world of athletics. As the National Wrestling Association’s Coaches New York Wrestler of the Year and a National Wrestling Coaches Association NCAA Division I Scholar All-American, he understands firsthand the discipline, resilience, and values required to excel at the highest levels of sport. This program is designed to enhance the culture of athletics by centering five core values: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership. Athletes explore how these values shape not only their performance on the mat or field, but also their choices in everyday life. Coaches learn how to intentionally define, model, and reinforce these principles in their training and mentorship, while parents are encouraged to see how their words and behaviors play a critical role in the growth of young athletes. Through an engaging presentation that weaves together storytelling, movement, and music, Dr. Hudson helps participants see athletics as more than competition—it is a powerful training ground for character. His approach emphasizes that true leadership is measured not just by athletic success, but by the ability to carry values of respect, discipline, and responsibility into every aspect of life. By connecting his own journey as a scholar-athlete with the lessons of leadership and character, Dr. Hudson inspires today’s athletes to embrace their full potential and prepares them to become tomorrow’s leaders.
