Program Description
Berta Gauto learned to perform traditional polkas at a young age, including La Galopera, a famous dance wherein women balance bottles and water jars on their heads in a demonstration of grace and balance. She danced for several years with a folkloric dance company known as Raína Potí. Berta moved to Mineola where the Paraguayan community numbers around 2000 people. Soon thereafter she formed the dance group Panambi Verá, which means 'Golden Butterfly' in the Guaraní language spoken by many Paraguayans. She saw their dancing as a good way of introducing the American public to Paraguayan culture while at the same time educating the community’s children about their heritage. Berta Gauto is originally from Asuncion, Paraguay and grew up in an artistic family of musicians, singers, songwriters, and dancers. Gauto was drawn to dance and learned traditional polkas from a young age and danced for several years with a folkloric dance company in Paraguay. She moved to Mineola in 2000 and formed the dance group Panambi Vera as a way of introducing the American public to Paraguayan culture while at the same time educating the community's children about their heritage. Today fifteen to twenty Paraguayan teenagers, led by Gauto’s two daughters, perform with the group. The ensemble also includes a musical duo playing Andean harp and guitar. Students will learn about the different culture and traditions of Paraguay, as well as having the opportunity to orally interview the performers.
