Program Description
Mala Desai is a master teacher and practitioner of the Oddisi form of Indian Dance. Odissi is an Indian classical dance that traces its origin to the State of Odisha in India, and dates back to the 2nd century B.C. It has intricate footwork, extensive use of abhinaya (facial expressions), elaborate use of mudras (hand gestures), and the innovative Sanchari Bhav (transcendental experience) as introduced in Odissi by Guru Mayadhar Raut in 1950s. Desai was born in New Delhi, and spent a significant portion of her life there, but her family traveled a lot because her father worked for the Indian railway. Desai, like other young Indian girls, started dancing at the age of 3 or 4 in the ‘Kathak’ style, a common form found in the region of Banaras. In 1992, Desai moved to the United States. In 1993, Desai began teaching dance and in 1997 she opened the first School of Odissi Dance in New York. Students will learn about the diversity and culture of India, and will have the opportunity to interview the presenter about life in India, traditional Indian dance, and the role of women.
