Program Description
Treehouse Shakers offers extraordinary workshops for the classroom in storytelling, dance, creative drama, writing, and African drumming. Treehouse Shakers follows NY State learning standards and tailors each class to the school's curriculum needs. The company creates a creative learning environment that fosters joy, student participation, imagination, and empathy towards new cultures and art forms. Classes strive to promote a positive self-concept, social awareness, empathy, and working as a group. In the creative drama class, students will explore poetry, folklore and rhymes, while learning to use their own voice, body, and imagination. Participation develops skills in language, sequencing, communication, early literacy comprehension, problem-solving, and creativity. The dance workshops can focus on modern, hip hop, African, or Broadway styles and explore elements of movement including locomotion, space, shape, and rhythm. Students are also encouraged to explore their own creative movement through improvisational activities. They have the opportunity to learn choreography and create their own dances with the teaching artist. Dance is an ideal art form for students to creatively express themselves, fine-tune motor skills, learn sequencing, practice spatial awareness, and develop kinesthetic skills.
