Program Description
In recent years Media Literacy has been noted as a vital part of adolescent intellectual development. It allows teens to learn how to dissect media and obtain meaning from the complex messages that are distributed over radio, television, and the internet. Film is a powerful teaching tool that allows students to comprehend contemporary issues in society. The program will offer films that adhere to a variety of classroom topics including History, LOTE, English, and Health. Together with the teacher, the facilitator will go through lesson plans and other discourse to address common core standards while also implementing a Media Literacy lesson that will take place over the course of three class sessions. The program highlights global issues and different perspectives of cultures; shows how films can be used as a tool for social justice, human rights and environmental stewardship; analyzes whether mainstream media normalizes violence and reinforces stereotypical ideas about gender, beauty, race and other cultures. In giving students the tools to develop Media Literacy, teachers are empowering their students to be able to adapt and grow in the 21st century.
