Program Description
Students learn to create one-of-a-kind low relief 3D tiles allowing them to experience the full range of the ceramic process. Tiles are a great way to create individual 3-dimensional works of art in clay that can become greater than the sum of their parts when the mural is complete. They start from scratch. Various appropriate themes allow us to create a tile mural. I.e. memorials, school themes, multicultural themes that could permanently be displayed in an architectural school setting or courtyard. Students take great pride in seeing their works permanently displayed for years to come. I have created interdisciplinary programs to integrate a literary element, music and visual arts through themes that relate to Greek theater, African dance and music, Native American Arts. Examples of how ceramic tile murals may be used to extend the cultural and literary dimensions of your curricula may be seen at recent installations. Coddle Elementary School, Tuckahoe, NY. Description: Rain forest mural. A 270-piece tile mural, inspired by 5th grade student’s poetry, was incorporated to fulfill literary standards and combine visual arts with the literary element. Preston Elementary School, West Harrison, NY. Description: Native American Indian. Tile mural depicting symbols, patterns and imagery. PVC Middle school, Croton, NY Description: 7th-grade classes worked together to create a mural depicting the interrelationships of animals in the rain forest. Lincoln Titus Elem. School - Crompond, NY Peace Mural Tile Project. - 2007 this ceramic mural was inspired by the painting, The Peaceable Kingdom by Edward Hicks and was created by the 3rd-grade students.
