Program Description
Sejal Kudadia is a traditional Indian Tabla player and one of few female tabla players. Learning to play and perform tabla was historically a male-oriented profession, but Sejal apprenticed in India and has become the only female classical tabla soloist in the United States. She will discuss the background, history and the role of tabla in South Asian society as well as the importance of music and this ancient instrument in their community. She can discuss being a woman in a male-dominated field. Demonstrations of how to play, and musical components specific to Indian tabla music will be part of the presentation. Students will also participate in playing a tabla, providing interactive opportunities.
