Program Description
My in-person visits are very dynamic. I use a combination of videos and music that show students the writing and drawing process that I go through to take an idea from beginning seed to a final story. I look to inspire students to create and write their own stories by suggesting some tools that I use. I keep my ideas in a journal, and I take those ideas and illustrate my books digitally. I bring this technology via laptop and iPad with me. My technology -based program is engaging and informative. Presentations are approximately 45 to 60 minutes long, depending on the ages of the group. (K thru 5) I touch upon writing, biology, research, illustration, and editing. Usually, my ideas start with a drawing. My drawings and writing work hand in hand to create a story. I also share a current story or idea with students and show the process from idea seed to finished story. During a live digital drawing section, I create a simple image which contains many of the concepts learned in curriculums: insect biology, the difference between a bug and beetle, primary and opposite colors, symmetry, and horizontal/ vertical placement. With the right touch of humor:-) I save a digital copy for the school that could be airdropped to the teachers afterward. There is always time for questions from the students at the end of my presentation.
