Program Description
In a world that often focuses on the top layer, this workshop invites participants to look deeper. "Beneath the Surface" explores the vibrant intersection of traditional Yoruba Adire textile traditions and the unique, subtractive art of reverse appliqué. Participants will journey through the history of Adire motifs—understanding the "secret language" of symbols like the Irukere (fly whisk) or Opon Ifa (divination board)—before creating their own multi-layered textile stories. By carefully cutting away portions of a top fabric, artists "unveil" a hidden world of hand-designed patterns and colors underneath, mirroring the way we discover culture, history, and ourselves. High School & College (Art & Design Programs) The Big Idea: "Identity and Layering." The Experience: Students will dive into the technicality of fabric tension and color theory. They will use reverse appliqué to explore themes of identity—deciding what to keep "hidden" and what to "reveal" to the world. Cultural Connection: A deeper dive into the sociology of Adire textiles and the preservation of indigenous Yoruba design in a modern fashion context. Professional Development (Creative Practice & Educators) The Big Idea: "Subtractive Storytelling." The Experience: Educators and artists will explore reverse appliqué as a mindfulness practice. This session focuses on the "swap"—the exchange of ideas and materials that builds community—and how to integrate culturally responsive textile arts into a standard curriculum. Cultural Connection: Mastery of symbolism in Yoruba textiles and the ethics of honoring traditional motifs while fostering personal creative expression. Decorative Arts – A hand-stitched Wall Hanging or a Throw Pillow Cover. All Materials included in the price
