Program Description
Participants use simple stitches to create intricate patterns. We focus on the Running Stitch, where the spaces between the stitches represent our life’s journey—the paths we take and the pauses we need. We use the Cross Stitch as a symbolic "covering," giving you the autonomy to choose which stories to unveil and which to keep private. Middle School (Drawing with Thread): "Let’s draw with thread! In this workshop, students will learn how to make 'secret paths' on fabric using simple stitches. We’ll look at cool Yoruba symbols that stand for things like strength and being a good friend. Each student makes their own piece, and then we see how they all fit together—just like how everyone in class is part of one big team!" 2. For High School & College (Identity & Creative Autonomy): "Explore the 'Common Thread' between your personal identity and the world around you. We’ll use hand-stitching as a form of visual journaling—choosing what parts of our story to share and what to keep hidden. You’ll experiment with traditional Yoruba motifs and color-layering, gaining full autonomy over your design while contributing to a collective project that honors 'unity in diversity.'" 3. For Enrichment Programs & Arts & Crafts Classes (Textile Narratives): "Indulge in the slow, meditative art of hand-stitching. This workshop is about storytelling through cloth. You’ll learn the cultural significance of Adire fabrics and motifs like Ibadan dun (sweet paths) while experimenting with colors and textures. It’s a rewarding, creative space where your hands do the weaving that connects your story to the community." 4. For Professional Development (The Connected Workplace): "This is a powerful team-building experience designed to build a stronger, more connected workplace. By exploring our individual 'threads of genius' through hand embroidery and patchwork, we foster empathy and trust. We use the language of textiles to reflect on the paths we take as professionals and as a collective, resulting in a shared artwork that symbolizes our unified goals and diverse strengths." Cultural Significance & Materials The Power of Adire: Participants will learn the symbolism of motifs like Ibadan dun (pathways/resilience) and Orokun aro (strength). Color & Design: You are encouraged to experiment with thread and fabric colors to reflect your personal "pulse." Hand-Designed Fabric: We use authentic, hand-designed fabrics that carry the weight of Yoruba heritage. Choose Your Canvas: Option 1: Wearable Arts – 20"x20" Cotton Scarf, Bandana, or T-shirt. Option 2: Decorative Arts – Wall Hanging or Custom Throw Pillow Cover.
