Program Description
Unlock the secrets of textile design in this innovative workshop that bridges ancient symbolism with modern creativity. Participants explore the deep meanings behind traditional Yoruba motifs and learn to carve their own design templates to create intricate, unique patterns. From pre-drawn inspiration to complex repeat designs, this workshop invites individuals to unleash their imagination on fabric. With a focus on experimentation and creative autonomy, you will delve into a world where heritage meets personal expression. 1. For Elementary & Middle School (Stamping Stories): "Become a textile designer for a day! In this fun workshop, students will discover 'secret' Yoruba symbols that stand for things like strength and friendship. We’ll learn how to carve our own stamps and print them over and over to create cool patterns on fabric. It’s like making your own wrapping paper, but on a beautiful scarf or pillow you can keep forever!" 2. For High School & College (Graphic Roots & Creative Autonomy): "Explore the intersection of graphic design and cultural heritage. This session focuses on the semiotics of Yoruba Adire motifs and the technical skill of creating repeat patterns. Students will carve their own templates, experimenting with color layering and form to produce a professional-grade textile project. It’s about owning your creative process and using ancient symbols to speak a modern visual language." 3. For Enrichment Programs & Arts & Crafts Classes (Unleash Your Imagination): "Discover the meditative joy of block printing and pattern design. This workshop is all about play and experimentation. You'll learn the meanings of traditional motifs, carve your own unique blocks, and create stunning repeat patterns on high-quality fabric. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or a total beginner, you’ll leave with a one-of-a-kind piece that is truly yours from start to finish." 4. For Professional Development (Designing Cultural Narratives): "An intensive for educators and artists looking to integrate Yoruba semiotics and printmaking into their creative practice. This workshop covers the historical significance of Adire motifs and the technical methodology of carving and repeat printing. We will discuss how to foster 'creative autonomy' in a classroom setting, allowing students to use traditional frameworks to express their own unique identities. You’ll leave with a finished project and a blueprint for culturally responsive design lessons." Class Objectives: Understand the cultural significance and symbolism of traditional Yoruba Adire motifs. Learn techniques for creating Adire designs using natural objects and hand-drawn patterns. Develop skills in carving templates and creating repeat patterns. Experiment with color, form, and resist techniques to produce unique fabric pieces. Complete and present a personal Adire design project. Choose Your Canvas: Option 1: Wearable Arts – Create a unique, hand-designed Cotton or Pashmina Scarf, T-shirt, or Bandana. (100% Silk options are available at an additional cost for a more luxurious finish). Option 2: Decorative Arts – Create a stunning Wall Hanging or a Custom Throw Pillow Cover. Pricing & Customization: All-Inclusive: Workshop fees include all carving tools, templates, and fabric. Flexible Format: Workshops are fully customizable and can be delivered as one-day intensives, multi-day sessions, or semester-long courses.
