Program Description
Experience the opulence of Bead Painting, a traditional art form deeply rooted in the Yoruba culture of Nigeria. Historically reserved for royalty and sacred objects, this technique transforms tiny seed beads into a vibrant "pigment" on wooden boards. Participants embark on a journey of creative expression, using beads to build textured, captivating visual narratives. This workshop celebrates artistic finesse, patience, and the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people. 1. For Elementary & Middle School (Sparkling Stories): "Get ready to paint with sparkles! In this workshop, students will discover how Yoruba kings and queens used tiny, colorful beads to tell big stories. Instead of using liquid paint and brushes, we’ll use 'seed beads' on wooden boards to create 3D pictures that shine. It’s a fun, hands-on way to explore color, pattern, and African history!" 2. For High School & College (Identity & Meticulous Design): "Explore the intersection of tradition and contemporary visual art. This session challenges students to use seed beads as a sophisticated medium for storytelling on wood. We’ll dive into the cultural importance of beadwork in Yoruba society and master the techniques of color-matching and texture-building. Students will move beyond simple decoration to create detailed, textured artwork that reflects their own personal narrative and identity." 3. For Enrichment Programs & Arts & Crafts Classes (Tactile Artistry): "Indulge in a meditative and rewarding creative experience. This workshop invites you to explore the 'richness' of Yoruba bead traditions by painting with seed beads on wooden panels. You’ll learn to layer and place beads to create a stunning piece of textured art. It’s a perfect blend of relaxation and high-end crafting, resulting in a beautiful, heirloom-quality piece of art." 4. For Professional Development (The Pedagogy of Patience): "An intensive for educators and artists focusing on the pedagogy of patience and cultural heritage. We’ll explore how to integrate Yoruba beadwork into the K-12 curriculum, focusing on Social Studies, Math (patterns/geometry), and Visual Arts. This workshop provides the tools to teach 'slow-art' techniques while honoring ancestral knowledge systems. Educators will leave with a framework for teaching culturally responsive, multi-sensory art lessons using unique materials like beads and wood." Customization & Advanced Options: Multi-day Sessions: Available for larger or more intricate designs. Advanced Levels: Deepen your practice with complex layering and 3D relief techniques (additional pricing applies). Semester-long Courses: Customized, in-depth curriculum available for schools and organizations.
