Program Description
For Elementary & Middle School: "Learn to 'draw' with a needle! This workshop teaches students how to hide a secret design inside their fabric using simple stitches. We’ll use a needle and thread to create patterns that only appear after the cloth is dyed—it's like magic storytelling with thread!" For High School & College: "Structural storytelling through the stitch. Adire Alabere, or the 'owner of the needle,' uses hand-sewing to create precise, geometric resists. Students will explore the relationship between line and texture, using traditional running and overcast stitches to build complex visual narratives within their textile art." For Professional Development/Adults: "A masterclass in the 'needle-resist' tradition of Southwestern Nigeria. This session explores the patience and precision required for Adire Alabere. We will analyze the historical role of the stitch as a form of cultural documentation, practicing traditional techniques that bridge the gap between textile art, structural design, and ancestral knowledge."
