Program Description
For Elementary & Middle School: "Discover the 'magic of the knot'! In this fun, tactile workshop, students learn how the Yoruba people used natural materials like raffia and strings to create secret patterns in fabric. We’ll fold, bunch, and tie our way to one-of-a-kind designs, learning how simple pressure can create beautiful art." For High School & College: "Explore the science and art of physical resistance. Adire Oniko is a traditional technique that uses physical tension to block dye. Students will experiment with complex folding and binding methods, exploring how the history of the raffia palm informs modern textile patterns and cultural identity." For Professional Development/Adults: "An immersive deep dive into the heritage of Nigerian tie-resist. This workshop focuses on the technical precision of Adire Oniko, examining the cultural significance of the raffia tradition. Participants will master advanced binding methods and discuss how to integrate global textile history and physical art-making into their own curriculum or creative practice." All Workshop Materials included Choose option: Decorative Arts ( Wall Hanging or Throw Pillow) Wearable Arts ( 20x20 cotton Scarf or Bandana.
