Program Description
This workshop is not only an art practice, but also a celebration of creativity and resilience. Through the traditional Yoruba textile art of Adire Eleko, which uses cassava paste to create vibrant, hand-drawn patterns on cloth. We’ll connect themes of cultural resilience with hands-on artmaking—students will design and design traditional Yoruba patterns and motifs using Cassava paste. 1. For Elementary & Middle School: "Did you know you can make art with food? In this hands-on workshop, students become 'textile detectives.' We’ll use a special 'magic paste' made from the cassava plant to draw secret designs on our fabric. Students will explore simple Yoruba symbols like the sun and the moon, learning how a humble root vegetable helps create beautiful wearable art!" 2. For High School & College: "Explore the intersection of heritage and contemporary design. This session dives into the technical and cultural layers of Adire Eleko. Students will analyze the semiotics of traditional Yoruba motifs and learn the precise application of cassava paste resist. We’ll discuss how ancestral knowledge systems continue to influence modern fashion and global art, allowing students to articulate their own identity through a finished textile piece." For Enrichment Programs & Arts & Crafts Classes (Creative Flow): "Unwind and create with the 'slow-art' of Adire. This workshop is perfect for those looking to explore a unique, eco-friendly textile medium. You’ll learn the meditative process of hand-painting with cassava resist, resulting in a beautiful, culturally rich piece of art. It’s a perfect blend of history, storytelling, and hands-on creativity." 4. For Professional Development (Pedagogy of the Paste): An intensive for educators and artists looking to integrate culturally responsive teaching into their practice. This workshop covers the history, chemistry, and storytelling of Adire Eleko. We will discuss how to adapt these techniques for the classroom using accessible materials, while honoring the integrity of the Yoruba tradition. Participants will develop a lesson plan framework centered on global textile histories and ancestral innovation." Choose Your Canvas: Option 1: Wearable Arts Create a unique, hand-designed 20"x20" Cotton Scarf or Bandana. This is a functional piece of art you can wear and share!
