Program Description
In the world of textile art, "resist" is the secret to beauty. It is the art of protecting parts of the fabric to create a story through color. This workshop is a mesmerizing journey into the Global Art of Batik, fused with the deep ancestral roots of Yoruba Adire. We explore the "Language of the Cloth" by blending the intricate motifs of Adire Eleko (traditionally starch-resist), the precision and the fluid magic of the fiber reactive dye. In the modern room-temperature resists, participants learn to "claim" their canvas. By carving their own custom cushion applicators and incorporating hand-stitched details, they don’t just make a pattern—they create a one-of-a-kind artifact that carries their own unique story. Middle School to High School Students dive into hands-on creation, carving their own foam cushions to "stamp" history onto fabric. They’ll explore the "magic" of room-temperature resists (cold wax) and see how their hand-carved patterns reappear once the fiber-reactive dyes are applied. Creative Spark: Encourages students to see themselves as "designers" and understand how individual symbols can be repeated to create a complex, professional-looking textile. College & University The Experience: A high-level technical session. Students will experiment with the interplay between Stitch-Resist (Adire Alabere) and Batik wax. They will analyze how "solvents" and fiber-reactive dyes interact with 100% natural cotton to create depth, texture, and cultural significance. Creative Spark: A deep dive into the ethics of "borrowing" traditional motifs and the importance of using hand-designed fabric in a world of fast fashion. Professional Development (Creative Practice & Educators) The Experience: This session empowers educators to bring complex textile traditions into their own spaces using accessible room-temperature mediums. They will practice the "Carved patterns, with Wax, Dye" workflow, learning how to facilitate a safe and culturally rich environment for students of all ages. Creative Spark: Focuses on the "Storytelling" aspect of Yoruba Adire—teaching history through the hands. The Tools: Custom-carved cushion/foam applicators for unique motif stamping. The Finish: Utilizing fiber-reactive dyes and specialized solvents to enhance and set the intricate patterns. What We’ll Explore Adire Symbolism: Identifying and interpreting the sacred motifs of the Yoruba people. The Art of the Reveal: Understanding how different resists protect the fabric from color. Repeat & Rhythm: Using pre-carved and custom-carved cushions to create sophisticated repeat patterns. All materials included Choose decorative or wearable Art
