Program Description
Hot Wax Resist-Dyeing with Adire Eleko Inspiration The Magic of the Resist Batik is more than just dye on fabric—it is a dance between what is hidden and what is revealed. In this workshop, we bridge the ancient global art of Batik with the rich, symbolic language of Yoruba Adire Eleko. Traditionally, Adire Eleko uses a cassava starch resist, but here, we translate those sacred motifs into the mesmerizing world of hot wax. Participants will become makers from the ground up, carving their own custom foam and cushion applicators to "stamp" their stories onto 100% natural cotton. By borrowing the bold, geometric patterns of the Yoruba people and infusing them with the fluid, crackled beauty of Batik, each participant creates a textile that is not just a piece of cloth, but a piece of cultural history. Middle School to High School Students get hands-on with tools, carving their own unique patterns into cushions to create "stamps." They’ll learn the science of fiber-reactive dyes and the "magic" of the wax reveal—where the wax stays white and the fabric turns vibrant colors. Creative Spark: Focuses on the satisfaction of repeat patterns and the "cool factor" of working with melted wax and vibrant dyes. College & University The Experience: A deeper dive into the technicality of "subtractive" design. Students will explore the history of Yoruba motifs (like the Onyagbe or Ibadan Dun) and learn how to translate starch-resist aesthetics into wax-resist techniques. Creative Spark: Emphasis on "fiber-reactive" chemistry and the use of solvents to create professional-grade, one-of-a-kind wearable or decorative art. Professional Development (Creative Practice & Educators) The Experience: Educators will explore how to teach complex cultural history through tactile making. This session focuses on the mindfulness of the "wax flow" and how to guide students through the multi-step process of carving, waxing, and dyeing. Creative Spark: Practical strategies for implementing "safe" hot-wax practices and integrating Yoruba symbolism into diverse curricula. Technical Highlights The Canvas: 100% natural cotton fabric for maximum dye absorption. 1. Wearable Art ( Scarf or Bandana) 2. Decorative Art (Wall Hanging, Throw Pillow Cover) The Tool: Custom-carved cushion applicators designed by the participant. The Process: A fusion of Adire Eleko (starch-style motifs) and Batik (wax-resist application). The Color: High-quality fiber-reactive dyes and solvents for professional, light-fast results. The Art of the Stamp: Carving cushions to create intricate repeat patterns. The Color Reveal: Understanding how wax protects the fabric from the dye to "unveil" a hidden design.
