Program Description
Arts-Based Civic Learning That Empowers Student Voice Voices of Change (VOC) is a full-day, in-school field trip that brings together students from two neighboring schools who are often isolated from one another and shaped by different cultural, economic, and lived experiences. Through the arts, students define their voices and learn how to actively create change. VOC creates a welcoming and affirming environment where students feel seen, respected, and safe to share their perspectives. Led by two professional teaching artists from different cultural backgrounds, students participate in interactive workshops using theater, movement, storytelling, and dialogue. With an inclusive curriculum and authentic, process-based assessment, they explore identity and lived experience, examine assumptions about the “other,” collaborate across difference, and create original, socially conscious performance work. The day culminates in a work-in-progress performance, with opportunities for continued development and presentation at the Stage the Change Conference.VOC supports Theatre, English, Social Studies, and Participation in Government curricula.
