Program Description
Wula Drum Performance Assembly Our youth performance assembly is entertaining, educational, and experiential. The group begins by performing the high energy, traditional folkloric rhythms from West Africa. We introduce and explain each instrument, its construction, name, sound and its cultural significance. In West Africa, drums are used to Communicate, Celebrate and Motivate. The power of the drums and the movement it inspires is what we are going to share with you! We add the dance and show the vibrancy of the movements and the power of self expression. Also, we introduce melody, not just rhythm by having a balaphonist (African Xylophone) or Flute. There is audience participation, encouraging the children to clap along, teaching a song in an African language and we even bring people up to the stage to dance with us! We show examples of this and have a great time learning about the culture while feeling the power of the drums!
