Program Description
This program provides live piano accompaniment and musical support for middle and high school choir ensembles (Grades 6–8). Pianist and educator Nahyoung Kim, a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate at Stony Brook University, collaborates directly with school choir directors and student singers to enhance rehearsals and performances through professional-level accompaniment. The program focuses on developing musical confidence, ensemble skills, and artistic expression within a choral setting. Through guided rehearsals, students learn to listen more deeply, match pitch and rhythm more accurately, and respond musically to a live accompanist. Nahyoung also provides coaching on musical phrasing, text expression, dynamics, and stylistic interpretation appropriate to the selected repertoire. This experience helps students understand the collaborative relationship between singers and accompanists, introducing them to real-world performance practices. The program supports the NY State Arts Standards in Performing, Responding, and Connecting, and aligns with Culturally Responsive–Sustaining Education by creating an inclusive and encouraging environment where all students can participate successfully regardless of musical background. Through this partnership, choirs gain the opportunity to rehearse and perform with a highly skilled pianist, enriching their musical experience and strengthening the school’s choral program.
