Program Description
This hands-on multi-modal program provides a safe space for multi-lingual learners to explore personal/cultural identity, heritage and empowered journeys by telling their personal history as a graphic novel. Students learn how to take readers through a timeline of their life weaving visualized narratives across storyboard panels that include formative moments from their childhood, family life and school activities, etc. The final page is as a “vision board” for their future career and personal aspirations. They step into and embody their hand-drawn cover illustrations by expressing their core concept with Light Painting, a long exposure photo technique where movement trails of light in a darkened room show up in one capture. The gallery-style presentation of books is an exciting experience for students when they realize they are able to understand and relate to each other’s stories, even though the speech bubbles and captions might be written in languages other than their own. Fostering self-awareness and a sense of belonging, they realize that each bio is an important part of our collective human story.
