Program Description
Chromatic Biodiversity is a multi-media, multi-sensory exploration of local wildlife, the habitats that sustain them, and the essential links to our own well-being. Echoing David Attenborough’s belief that children must understand nature in order to protect it, the program confronts Long Island’s limited free public shoreline access and the resulting disconnect many school-aged children have with nature, marine life in particular. Through partnerships among art, biology, and environmental studies, students investigate how everyday choices shape ecological health. Blending traditional art with new media, they will examine nature through the lenses of science, perceptions from the past and popular culture of today. They will engage in direct wildlife encounters with a Sea Shore Safari provided by Cornell Cooperative Extension, Light Painting Photography and other art forms culminating in a public exhibition. Upon completing this program, students will expand their awareness of the importance of biodiversity, while gaining creative confidence in collaboration with their classmates and teachers that will inform their learning, aspirations, and sense of possibility.
