Program Description
ScribeCraft: Ink Explorers immerses students in the global story of the written word through hands-on art, science, and history. Learners make natural inks from turmeric and berries, craft a reed-style pen from a straw, and observe a vivid color change using a simple baking soda pH solution. Along the way, they discover how early civilizations developed practical ways to record ideas and share knowledge. The session blends visual art with basic chemistry as students test pigment strength, try different ink thicknesses, and practice strokes to create writing and illustrations. Designed for grades 3 to 6, this interdisciplinary workshop supports Visual Arts with integrated Science, ELA, and Social Studies connections. It also supports a welcoming and affirming environment by highlighting diverse cultural origins of inks and writing traditions so every student can see humanity’s shared creativity reflected in their own work.
