This professional development experience is designed to empower music educators with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to maintain and repair their school instruments—ensuring every student has access to instruments that play their best all year long. Participants will engage in hands-on training that covers all major instrument families, including wind, string, percussion, and acoustic piano maintenance. The workshop can be delivered in one comprehensive session or broken into a multi-part series tailored to the specific needs of your music department. Workshop Topics Include: 1. Beginning-of-Year Set-Up • Assessing and organizing instruments for student use • Cleaning, lubricating, and assembling instruments correctly • Setting up classroom and storage systems to minimize damage and wear 2. Wind Instrument Care & Repair • Replacing pads, corks, and springs • Repairing stuck slides and mouthpieces • Basic adjustments to improve tone and playability 3. String Instrument Maintenance • Replacing strings, tuning pegs, bridges, and fine tuners • Repairing open seams and minor cracks • Proper cleaning, bow care, and rosin use 4. Percussion Instrument Maintenance • Head replacement and tuning for drums • Hardware tightening and lubrication • Care for cymbals, mallet instruments, and auxiliary percussion 5. Acoustic Piano Maintenance • Routine cleaning and key maintenance • Understanding tuning cycles and basic pitch checks • Techniques to maintain best tone quality between tunings 6. Mid-Year and End-of-Year Evaluations • Assessing instrument condition and prioritizing repairs • Preparing instruments for storage • Creating repair lists and communicating effectively with repair technicians Format Options • Single Full-Day Workshop: Covers all instrument families with demonstration and hands-on practice. • Series Format: Individual sessions focused on specific instrument groups for deeper skill-building and follow-up application. By the end of this PD, participants will walk away with practical repair skills, maintenance checklists, and a clear process to extend the life of their school instruments, saving time, money, and frustration throughout the year.
