Program Description
How do objects and places shape lives and communities? In this two-day workshop, students explore how objects and places shape lives and communities through art. On day 1, they learn about symbolism, choosing symbols relevant to their studies and creating art using the Gelli printmaking process. Day 2 involves collaborative mural creation through collage work, combining their printed papers into larger pieces. This workshop aligns with Social Studies, Science, or ELA curricula, with Moriah working alongside teachers to ensure relevance. It addresses New York State Learning Standards for the Arts, specifically Anchor Standards 2 and 10. Students apply visual organizational strategies to design and produce artwork that communicates ideas, while also learning to design or redesign objects, places, or systems to meet diverse users' needs. They will make art collaboratively to reflect on and reinforce positive aspects of group identity. Through this creative process, students gain a deeper understanding of symbolism's role in art and society.
