Program Description
How can the viewer "read" a work of art as text, and how does knowing and using visual art vocabulary help us understand and interpret works of art? We will use art as a common language to analyze and interpret their literature studies, and students will use their creative skills to understand better their studies of the works of literature read in class. The students will analyze their literary assignments and express their reactions using visual interpretation. We will choose an artistic printmaking medium such as cyanotype, gelli print, or foam board relief printing. This workshop aligns with ELA curricula, with Moriah working alongside teachers to ensure relevance. It addresses New York State Learning Standards for the Arts, specifically Anchor Standards 2, 8 and 10, organizing artistic ideas and work, interpreting meaning in artistic work, constructing interpretations of artwork, supported by relevant and sufficient evidence found both in the work and in surrounding contexts.
