Program Description
Hispanic Heritage | Black History Month | All year culturally responsive program. Music program with international musician Juan Uribe, an Interactive Workshop Exploring Colombian Heritage where students embark on a musical journey to discover the rich cultural tapestry of Colombian Atlantic Coast. Through engaging activities and hand-on experiences, students will learn about the different influences that have shaped the region’s traditional music, focusing on the vibrant genre of Cumbia, a musical style that has influenced modern music all over the world. Workshop Highlights: 1. Cultural Exploration: Dive into the history and origins of Atlantic coast music, uncovering the blend of Indigenous, African and Spanish elements. Explore how these diverse cultures contributed to the unique sounds and rhythms of modern musicians like Carlos Vives, Shakira, Bomba Estéreo and Quantic. 2. Learn the basic rhythmic patterns of Cumbia, a genre born from the fusion of these cultural influences. 3. Practice playing these patterns using traditional instruments such as Tambora, Alegre, Llamador and Gaitas. By the end of this workshop, participants will not only have a deeper understanding of Colombian music and its cultural roots but also a newfound appreciation for the way music connects communities and tells the stories of their ancestors.
