Program Description
What do you get when teachers and a published author-illustrator collaborate? Your students who come away with results they can take home; hands-on fun which boosts literacy and enriches curriculum. The structure of children's picture book-making is a treasure trove of teaching materials encouraging students to participate in all parts of the process as they write stories they can see and draw. First, specific word prompts are given which must be used in the story. Then, folded and numbered first draft prototype books are created using a printer’s formula, helps to explore narrative arc, word pacing, and building the story. Finally, students learn how to integrate the use of the writing prompts and visual tools by critiquing each other's work. Supplies needed: Blank copy paper, pencils, erasers, markers, crayons, pens. Handouts: Teacher Guides with discussions, writing and art prompts. Melanie Hope Greenberg is an author and a widely published illustrator of 17 trade published picture books. Greenberg’s visual interactive workshops are best suited for K through 5th Grade. Greenberg’s MERMAIDS ON PARADE was selected by Brooklyn Public Library for their ‘125 Essential Brooklyn Booklist’ and featured at the Center for Brooklyn History.
