Program Description
The Author Visit and Read Aloud begins with an overview of the book writing and publishing process, prompting students to think about how they generate ideas for their writing. Careers in book writing and publishing are discussed. The read aloud of Noah’s Intense Day starts with a focus on our five senses and how we take in the world. During the read aloud, students follow Noah, the main character, through an intense day of sensory experiences as he wonders, what if every day felt like this. After the read aloud of the book, the author facilitates a set of discussion questions with students including why Noah was upset at the end of the book and whether students themselves have had days where they have felt more sensitive or overwhelmed by their senses. The sensory processing challenges often common with Autism Spectrum Disorder are highlighted and students discuss how Noah experienced some of these sensory challenges throughout the book. Additional literary elements such as identification of sign posts, figurative language and changes in the character from the beginning to the end of the book can be added as requested and appropriate for the grade level of the students.
