Program Description
In this workshop, students are invited to create art prints using a simple and quick printmaking technique. They will be working with gel plates and acrylics to create unique impressions on paper. Students will explore simple and fun techniques to narrate their work and will be challenged to convey their ideas in a visual language. They will prep their boards with a few drops of paint and brayers, and make patterns and drawings directly onto the gel plate. We will then lay the paper over our plates and press with our hands. We will be able to pull a few prints each as this method is a quick and reliable way of experimenting with color and texture. The results are often surprising and unusual! Moriah will work with educators to fit this workshop to complement the curriculum. This technique can be applied to lessons in Science, Social Studies, and ELA. For example, the workshop could be an interpretation of characters from literature that the students are reading, or applying to butterfly life cycles in science. Moriah will tailor the printmaking lesson to fit the curriculum timing. It can also be that this workshop can be a destresser for students, and Moriah will guide the printmaking process for this kind of experience. This workshop can be completed with a class of students in one session. An optional second session is available, where Moriah can work to display and exhibit the student’s artwork, conduct a positive and encouraging discussion where students can interpret each other’s work, and celebrate their achievements. Moriah can also create a brief video showcasing the finished pieces and create a digital animation of the student work to provide to the educators for this optional second session.
