Program Description
In this workshop, students are invited to create their monoprints. They will be working with foam boards creating artistic imprints, and utilizing their boards to create block prints on paper. Students will explore simple and fun techniques to narrate their work and will be challenged to convey their ideas in a visual language. They will prep their boards using imprinting designs with just pens or pencils. Once satisfied with their drawing and imprint, they will be provided a paint color or two to make their prints. Using brayers to fill their blocks with color, we will lay the paper over and use a simple press to create unique prints. Students are invited to discuss their work and to interpret each other’s work positively and encouragingly. Moriah will work with educators to fit this workshop to complement the curriculum. This technique can be applied to lessons in Science, Social Studies, and ELA. For example, the workshop could be an interpretation of the literature that the students are reading, or applying to the studies in science curriculum. Moriah will tailor the drawing lessons to fit the curriculum timing. It can also be that this workshop can be a distressor for students, and Moriah will guide the printmaking process for this kind of experience. This workshop can be completed with a class of students in two sessions. Workshop 1 introduces samples, history, and techniques of printmaking, and directs the students to design their boards. Workshop 2 continues creating the boards, and then making our prints with our materials (brayers, paint, printing press, and paper). An optional 3rd session is available, where Moriah can work to display and exhibit the student’s artwork, conduct a positive and encouraging discussion where students can interpret each other’s work, and celebrate their achievements. Moriah can also create a brief video showcasing the finished pieces and create a digital animation of the student work to provide to the educators for this optional session.
